Banded Mongoose

The banded mongoose is often confused by tourists with the meerkat, because it stands up on its hind legs to get a better view of its environment. Mongooses eat insects, snakes, frogs, bird eggs and lizards. They also hang out and travel in groups of up to 30 members, which are lead by one dominant male and three or four dominant females. The mongooses in this photograph just chased two jackals out of a shaded resting place, which just goes to show that smaller animals in large numbers can sometimes boss around larger animals in nature.
